Genre: Silent Hill

 (Only up to 3:13)

Key Character Types
The beginning is with a young woman (protagonist) running, due to the mise en scent of the woman wearing shorts and white socks tells the audience she is wearing unpractical clothing for running this stereotypically is a feminine trait. From the speed she is running and the tight fitted clothing choice implies she is a healthy person who perhaps is confident with her body and doesn't find the need to cover herself in mankinline traits of baggy clothing. The idea of having this main character having traits of femininity tells the audience she is perhaps vulnerable towards danger and death and allows the audience to assume that she is an easy target which instantly links back to the genre of horror, as female characters are stereotypically the characters in danger or targeted on by the antagonist making the audience fear for the them.

Another Protagonist character is shown about 40 seconds in to the opening, a young girl in nightwear. This links to the genre Horror because a child is stereotypically is known as vulnerable and unaware of danger. This creates tension for the audience as they are not sure whats going to happen next. When the genre is Horror and a child is used as a protagonist they are often the victims or even sometimes the antagonist. The clothing used show the girl is young and oblivious to the world around her as she is wearing nightwear at the top of a cliff edge, this also applies she is unpractical which stereotypically is a feminine trait which instantly makes the audience link back to the older woman suggesting she is the mother of the child as they carry the same gender traits. This tells the audience that their perhaps both in danger as a horror film often use the stereotype of the female being the victim and vulnerable towards the antagonist.

The antagonist appears later with the young child suggesting they are connected and the child is a vitum towards the antagonist. The antagonist showed clear to the audience because of the bright fire colors and filters used represent a symbol of hell and evil spirit, linking to the genre of supernatural and the idea of perhaps a historical or spiritual event thats affecting the protagonist, also the child looked over powered and mentally controlled by this antagonist trying to lead her to death by falling off the cliff which links back to her being a victim. the moment where her parents are waking the child up shows the audience a link of children being stereotyped as living in a fantasy and dreaming suggesting the child may of made up the antagonist or imagined it as the parents were unaware of what was happening to the girl. This shows the audience the child is suffering in silence and isn't reaching for help showing she is unsafe and in danger, creating tension for the audience.

The Stock Character
The Stock character is shown with a  depth focus pull effect and an effective camera tilt of a healthy young male on a balcony wearing trouser bottoms. The aspect of the male topless inppies he is stereotyped as mankinline traits suggesting he is perhaps powerful and confident, inppling he may be the stereotypical hero. This makes the audience link to a horror genre because the stock characters are usually the people who safe the main characters from the antagonist. From the way the character has been positioned in the shot in the background shows the audience he is perhaps the stock character as he doesn't appear as much as the woman in the opening.

Narratives And Stock Situations-
The protagonist is searching for her daughter trying to save her which in the process may lead her in danger, as Horror film always uses the idea of the hero becoming in greater danger, as it creates tension for the audience as she thinks shes safe. The antagonist affecting the child may be a spiritual or demon like creature, mentally or physically dangering the child increasingly getting worse and frequent as the film continues affecting both the child and mother. Meanwhile the stock character, male is trying to save his family from getting in danger by solving and even sometimes stopping the antagonist from harming the protagonists by working on the sidelines and gathering important evidence and clues.

Genre Iconography
In this opening low-key lighting and dark filters were used to create dark tones which links to the icon of death and evil which is instantly associated with the genre of Horror. Diegetic sounds were used to create a windy noise and non diegetic sounds of high pitch sting music was used when something was scary or evil happened. This builds tension and makes the audience more scared. Long shots were used to show the setting and location of the characters, living in an isolated house surrounded woodlands showing they are ordinary people which makes the audience assume this can happen to anyone making it more realist. The woodland location is stereotyped as being in a horror film as its an dark and mysterious place which is isolated from the outer world so the audience assume the characters are unsafe and haven't got help to turn too. A fast dolly is used to frighten the audience because it was moving in to a place which resembled hell. It was used to draw the audience into a new world linking to the genre of supernatural, also the use of the cliff top shows the distance between Earth and Hell.

Themes Of A Supernatural Horror
This genre tends to have themes of Gods, Ghost ,spirits or an historical importance/event which now is affecting the Protagonist characters. Theses supernatural creatures are the antagonist which in this type of genre try to seek revenge and justice to what may of occurred in the past. A horror genre film is often associated with blood, dark and evil in order to create fear towards the audience. Another theme is good verses evil and this film uses with the child protagonist to have this affect.

Typography
The title of "Silent Hill" appears later in the opening after the action and the drama of the girl becoming controlled by the supernatural creature showing a connection with the title and the creature making the audience assume the creature is Silent Hill perhaps. The effective fadein effect is used to clearly show the audience the title with a black backdrop and white writing to standout and to show the importance of the word. The font is created to make the audience link to evil and blood as its not perfectly in a line and neat, showing the stereotypical text for this genre. This makes the audience assume the words "Silent Hill" is antagonist as it appears evil and against the protagonist characters.
